Safe Kids Week 2012 aims to reduce poisoning

May 31, 2012

According to Safe Kids Canada, poisoning is the fourth leading cause of death and disability for Canadians of all ages. For this reason, Safe Kids Week 2012, which takes place May 28 – June 3, focuses on poison prevention among children and youth.

The theme for the week is “Out of Sight and Locked Up Tight”, raising awareness of the measures that should be taken in the home to prevent injury. Proper storage and handling of hazardous materials can prevent poison exposure, both now and in the future.

“Teaching young children about safety in the home can have a lasting impact throughout their lives,” said Bill Reid, Director of Occupational Health and Safety with the Workers Compensation Board (WCB). “Safety lessons learned at an early age will translate into lifelong safe work habits.”

Poison prevention among children and youth is particularly important at this time of year, with summer employment season approaching. New and young workers may be encounter chemicals on the job, such as cleaning products, which may be hazardous if used incorrectly.  Effective training, equipment and knowledge are critical in preventing injury.

The WCB has a variety of resources, including a youth education consultant, to assist young workers, their employers and their teachers with safety matters at work. Everyone in the workplace has the right to be safe, and the responsibility to work together to keep each other safe.
