Culture of workplace safety gaining momentum
Prince Edward Island’s culture of workplace safety is gaining momentum, with a reduction in its rate of workplace injury as reported by the Workers Compensation Board. The province’s injury frequency continued a downward trend in 2010, with 1.21 claims for workplace injuries for every 100 full-time workers, compared to 1.33 the year before. This statistic indicates that, more and more, Island workplaces are making safety a priority.
This statistic was one of many success stories reported at the WCB’s Annual Public Meeting, held on June 27, 2012, in Charlottetown. The purpose of the meeting was to present the WCB 2011 Annual Report to stakeholders, and to continue the dialogue about safety and compensation issues that are most important to Island workers and employers.
“We are very pleased with our results from last year, which motivate us to do even better,” said Nancy Guptill, Workers Compensation Board Chair. “Working closely with our stakeholders has made this possible, as we strive toward our common goal to keep Islanders safe and secure from workplace injury.”
Other key results from 2011 include: added value for Island employers, with a reduced average assessment rate; continued excellence in service delivery and efficiencies in claim processing; and a healthy funding status despite investment volatility and rising claims costs.
The Workers Compensation Board works in collaboration with stakeholders to prevent injury, to assist injured workers and to administer a sustainable safety and compensation system that protects Island workplaces.
