Investigation into workplace fatality complete
The Occupational Health and Safety Division of the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) has completed its investigation into the February 8, 2012 incident that took the life of an Island worker.
“On behalf of the Workers Compensation Board, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues,” said Nancy Guptill, Workers Compensation Board Chair. “The pain of losing a loved one to a workplace injury is something that none of us should have to endure.”
After a thorough investigation, the findings were inconclusive about the direct cause of the incident. The five-month investigation included inspections of the workplace, interviews with workers and employers, collaboration with the Charlottetown City Police and a review of international industry standards. Upon consultation with the Crown Prosecutor, it was determined that no charges will be laid under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
“One of our primary concerns in an investigation is to find ways to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future,” said Bill Reid, WCB Director of Occupational Health and Safety. “Our investigation revealed a number of opportunities to improve health and safety at this workplace, and we will be working closely with the employer to ensure the safety of workers.”
The Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations describe the rights and responsibilities of employers and workers on PEI, and the WCB offers programs and services to assist in creating safer Island workplaces.
