The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is December 3rd
The Workers Compensation Board (WCB) wishes to advise Islanders that December 3, 2012 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Since 1992, this day has marked the global effort to raise awareness and understanding of disability issues. This year’s theme focuses on the removal of barriers to create an inclusive and accessible society for all. The WCB encourages all Islanders to work together to remove barriers for workers who are returning to work after a workplace injury or illness.
In the past five years, over four thousand Islanders have suffered workplace injuries which have resulted in time lost from work. The WCB offers Return to Work programs and services to assist those who have experienced a temporary or permanent disability by focusing on their abilities. Work is an important part of life and being active, productive and connected to the workplace is beneficial to overall well-being. In partnership with workers, employers and healthcare providers, the WCB develops programs to ensure a safe and timely return to work.
“In a province the size of Prince Edward Island, each of us has been touched in one way or another by workplace disability,” said Nancy Guptill, Workers Compensation Board Chair. “We can all do something to help those who have been directly impacted, by showing support for family, friends and co-workers as they return to work. Together, we can remove barriers for those with disabilities by reinforcing the valuable contribution they make.”
