Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island

Internal Responsibility System

The Occupational Health and Safety Act on Prince Edward Island is based on the Internal Responsibility System.

The Internal Responsibility System places the responsibility for workplace health and safety on everyone in the workplace.

Employers are responsible for maintaining safe environments by providing adequate equipment and training about hazards and safe practices. In turn, workers are responsible to report safety hazards and to follow safe work practices.

The goal of the Internal Responsibility System is to reduce the incidence of workplace injury and illness. This system is effective when everyone works together.

The WCB supports the Internal Responsibility System by:
  • Establishing and clarifying the responsibilities of all workplaces.
  • Supporting workers, employers, associations and educators in building and maintaining healthy and safe workplaces.
  • Intervening when safety responsibilities are not carried out.
