Global Asbestos Awareness Week is April 1 - 7, 2012
During Global Asbestos Awareness Week, the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) encourages all Islanders to consider of the potential hazards related to asbestos, particularly in the workplace. The purpose of the week is to prevent injury from exposure, by raising global awareness of the associated hazards and the important precautions that must be taken with asbestos.
Asbestos can be found in many materials in the workplace, such as shingles, insulation, pipe and wire wrapping, drywall, joint compound, floor and ceiling tiles, countertops and brake pads. Exposure to asbestos fibres and asbestos dust can cause serious respiratory problems later in life, including asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
“The risk of exposure when asbestos containing materials are still in tact is usually low," said Bill Reid, Workers Compensation Board Director, “but when asbestos containing materials are damaged or are crumbling due to age, the fibres and dust can circulate in the air, posing significant health risks if inhaled. It is important to know the risks, so the proper precautions are taken."
If asbestos is suspected in the workplace, the risk must be properly assessed before the suspected materials are handled. Asbestos must not be disturbed or removed, unless the work is approved by the WCB Occupational Health and Safety Division and is performed by a trained and certified asbestos abatement contractor. It is essential that proper personal protective equipment be used to avoid inhalation and contamination.
On Prince Edward Island, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and General Regulations outline the specific requirements and responsibilities in keeping workplaces safe from asbestos exposure. The legislation covers areas such as exposure limits, prohibited use of materials, requirements for asbestos removal and workplace assessments.
