Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island

December 3rd marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 02, 2011

The Workers Compensation Board (WCB) of Prince Edward Island encourages all Islanders to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, and to reflect on how we can work together to promote inclusion and empowerment of people of all abilities.

First proclaimed by the United Nations in1992, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to build global awareness and understanding of disability issues. This year’s theme focuses on inclusion of persons with disabilities to participate in development efforts.

“The Workers Compensation Board is committed to mainstreaming disability into the workplace through our policies and programs”, said Sharon Cameron, WCB Chief Executive Officer. “Persons with disabilities provide an invaluable voice and unique perspective that strengthens our provincial safety and compensation system to the benefit of us all.”

Every year on Prince Edward Island, approximately 1700 new workplace injuries occur.  The WCB works in partnership with Island workers and employers to promote timely and safe return to work initiatives that focus on abilities of all levels. Removing barriers and promoting inclusive employment opportunities enables those affected by disability to remain active, productive and connected to the workplace, all of which contributes to well-being and recovery.
