Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island

Registration

How Do I Register?

As an employer operating in PEI, you are responsible for contributing to the Island's workers compensation system. You can do so by registering with the WCB and renewing your registration every year if you are in an industry covered by the Workers Compensation Act:

For PEI Employers:

  • You are an employer operating in PEI with at least one regular or part-time worker.

For Out-of-Province Employers:

  • You employ PEI-resident workers, working in PEI for any period of time
  • You employ non-PEI residents to work in PEI and you intend for them to work a total of 10 or more days in PEI, in a calendar year.
Once registered, our Online Services allows you to view and make changes to your account information at any time.
  • Employer Account Maintenance lets you view your basic employer information.
  • Employer Account Status allows you to view your account status and payroll history.

New Registration

New employers are required to register with the WCB before the start of operations. You can register with us through our Employer Registration Form via the WCB's Online Services.

You can also register by completing a physical copy of our Employer Registration Form.

PLEASE NOTE: Employers who fail to register with the WCB may receive an arbitrary assessment plus penalties for filing late. You may also have to reimburse the WCB for the full cost of compensation for any claims filed prior to registration.

Employer Registration Renewal

Each year, by February 28, you must renew your registration with WCB. You do so by reporting your actual payroll for the previous year and an estimated payroll for the current year.

We will send you a renewal package each January as a reminder. When renewing your registration, please keep in mind the following:
  • Report your payroll using the calendar year January 1 to December 31 and maximum assessable earnings (MAE). The MAE for 2025 was $82,900 and the MAE for 2026 is $89,300.
  • Your premiums are based on your estimated payroll for the current year with adjustments made based on your actual payroll for the previous year. If your actual payroll is more than 25% higher than your estimated payroll you will receive an underestimating penalty. You can avoid penalties by:
    • Reviewing your annual payroll estimate regularly, and submitting a revised estimate prior to November 1 each year.
    • Joining the Monthly Assessment Payment Option (MAPO) where you pay premiums each month that are based on actual payroll only.
  • There are two options to submit an employer registration renewal:
    • You may renew your registration via the Employer Registration Renewal form in the WCB Online Services.
    • You may complete the physical copy of the Employer Registration Renewal Form included in your renewal package and return the completed form.
Please note that late filing may result in arbitrary assessment and penalties.

Closing Out Your WCB Account

As an employer, you are responsible for closing out your WCB account when:
  • Your business is operating but you no longer have workers.
  • Your business is no longer operating.
  • You have sold your business.
  • You are an out-of-province employer who is operating in PEI for less than 10 days in a calendar year.
